The Chokehold Fashion Magazines Had on Us in the 80s & 90s

If you grew up in the 80s and 90s, fashion magazines really had a hold on us in the best way. Before social media, before influencers, there were stacks of glossy magazines sitting on coffee tables, stuffed in backpacks, or spread across our bedroom floors. We waited for new issues of Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and Marie Claire like they were little windows into a cooler, more stylish world. We tore out pages, circled outfits we loved, and tried to recreate looks with whatever we could find at the mall or in the back of our closet. Fashion felt exciting back then—less about trends moving at lightning speed and more about finding pieces that made you feel confident.

And then there were the supermodels. They weren’t just beautiful—they felt larger than life. Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Kate Moss influenced everything we wanted to wear—from denim and leather jackets to slip dresses and oversized blazers. There was something very Gen X about it all: cool without trying too hard, a little edgy, a little undone, but always stylish. Maybe that’s why so many of us still love fashion today. It reminds us of a time when getting dressed felt personal, fun, and very rock and roll.
