Breaking it down-

  • Heat can damage natural fibers. Think of your hair and a curling iron. The quicker and less often it's used, the softer your hair is. Same with your clothing.
  • Elastic will breakdown. Spandex and elastic are polymers similar to plastic and will slowly melt or lose their stretch with excess heat.
  • The solution: Air drying. It can increase garment life by years.  The surfaces of your clothing are not stripped away. If you air dry, your clothes may go out of style before they are worn out.
  • Line drying outside is my absolute favorite. I hang everything out in the morning and the sun does it's job. The fabrics smell clean and fresh. If it feels a little stiff, just shake it a few times before folding or hanging in your closet.
  • Sweaters and knits can be laid out flat to dry to retain their shape and size. You can use a device specially made for this or lay flat on a towel inside or outside where it will stay clean. Keeping them flat helps the knit not stretch out in an unwanted shape.

Clothing care skills will make your outfits last wayyyyy longer, look better and use less energy at home. We call this a win, win, win!
